In 1498 Niccolo Machiavelli began his career as an active politician in the city state of Florence Italy. After almost a decade of service he was driven from his post when the republic fell. Repeated efforts to win the the confidence and approval of the new regime were unsuccessful. Machiavelli was forced to retire.

Interesting how the difference between his retirement and Lorenzo Medici's death are almost 10 years apart...kind of doesn't make sense.
